Description

Join us on January 27, 2025, as Steve Martin kicks off the relaunch of the NEI TEC Talk Series with a deep dive into two essential concepts in animal care and training: choice and control. While often seen as one concept, these terms have distinct meanings and applications that can transform how we interact with the animals in our care. Empowering animals with choice and control starts with giving an animal a voice through its body language and responding appropriately as we adjust antecedents and consequences. This approach challenges outdated training practices rooted in dominance and instead emphasizes building partnerships where animals become voluntary participants in their training. By recognizing and responding to an animal’s body language, trainers can create a more collaborative and welfare-focused environment that prioritizes trust and understanding. In this 60-minute Zoom session, Steve will unpack the nuances of choice and control, share practical examples, and discuss building trusting relationships to enhance animal welfare. The talk will conclude with 30 minutes of Q&A and discussion.
