Description
This talk will examine the behavioral effects of traumatic experiences in dogs, such abuse and abandonment. In a survey study with over 4,400 participants, we collected data on life history of stressful events as well as the Canine Behavior and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ). We found that stressful events had the greatest impact when they occurred within the first 6 months of life. Dogs who experienced stressful events within this time period were significantly more likely to show elevated fear and aggression across all C-BARQ subscales. Furthermore, the impact of early life stress varied significantly across breeds, indicating the likely presence of innate factors for resilience and sensitivity. The next steps of this research will involve genomic analyses, to identify putative protective and risk alleles, as well as neuroimaging analyses, to examine how heritable genetic susceptibility interacts with environmental exposure within the lifetimes of individual dogs.
