Description

The appearance of pet cats and dogs is an important factor in adoption decisions. There is evidence that there are biases towards certain traits (e.g., coat colors), though the scientific literature is mixed and scant. The current work examines human perception of dogs and cats utilizing a novel methodology to develop nuance and deeper insight into the stereotyping processes that influence interactions with dogs and cats. Specifically, the current utilizes generative artificial intelligence to create photorealistic mental representations of dogs and cats to model human biases, focusing on visual stereotypes and perceptions of adoptability, dominance, intelligence, friendliness, and aggression. The presentation will discuss future directions and implications for human-animal interactions.
