Description

Differential reinforcement of alternative behavior is a cornerstone procedure for problem-solving without punishment. On the surface, it sounds very simple: we just ask, “What behavior do you want instead?” and proceed to teach it while limiting reinforcement for the problem behavior. However, reality is seldom so straightforward. Common reasons for DRA failure include neglecting to investigate the purpose that the unwanted behavior serves for the learner and selecting reinforcers that don't match (or beat) what's maintaining it. But another often-overlooked factor is the selection of the alternative behavior itself. This talk will survey documented best practices for choosing alternative behaviors and suggest ways to choose alternatives that are more likely to foster successful and lasting behavior change.
