Most owners have a vision of what their life will look like with their dog before ever getting that dog. It may be sitting in a cozy armchair in front of a roaring fire with the dog curled at their feet, on a snowy winter day. It may be having a companion who loves to run five miles every morning, then hit the park for some invigorating Frisbee catching, and end the day out in the kayak to watch the sunset. Maybe they’re remembering their own childhood dog and see a companion for the kids, the dog getting into mischief with them, but not letting anything terrible happen. Regardless, as trainers, we know those dogs don’t happen miraculously, and today’s world is not the world Lassie and Timmie lived in. Most people today work and lead very busy lives. As owners, we have to make that effort to have a good relationship with our dog, and we don’t always know how. And, in truth, all most dogs want is more family time. If trainers can help owners and dogs have fun together (especially while getting a little training in at the same time!), well then, we’ve done our job.
