Description
Emotional Regulation in Dogs: How to help them build the skills needed to deal with everyday life. This course will help dog professionals learn the key aspects of species-typical behaviors for calming the nervous system when they are dysregulated. Students will learn how to teach concentrated sniffing, purposeful petting, chewing, licking, and training techniques to help dogs cope with tolerable stress. I will be referencing Dr. Kristina Spaulding's "The Stress Factor in Dogs", Dr. Becky Kennedy's "Good Inside", my course notes from Dr. Laura Donaldson, and the works of Bessel Van der Kolk and Peter Levine. Training techniques will be from Leslie McDevitt's "Control Unleashed” and engage/disengage from Alice Tong. Video examples of my last three years will be included focusing on teaching dogs how to use their species-typical behaviors to cope independently of their humans. Live demos will also be provided. Learning objectives 1. Understanding emotional regulation and what it looks like 2. Learn to teach dogs to cope with tolerable stress independently of humans 3. Learn to support a dog with big feelings 4. Learn how to help calm a dog's nervous system 5. Learn how to apply these techniques in group classes and private lessons
