Description

Learning is a process that results in a change in knowledge, behavior or skills as a result of environmental, experiential, emotional or cognitive factors. As well as humans and animals, machines and some plants have been shown to possess the ability to learn. Animals learn about the world around them in a variety of different ways, and yet it is still commonplace, within the dog world, to hear that ‘the quadrants of reinforcement learning are how animals learn’, as a standalone statement. In this webinar we will take a closer look at the quadrants, outlining some common misconceptions, and important limitations of their use. We will go as far as to explore the benefits of ceasing to use the quadrants as a way of understanding animal learning, and making the case that truly science based behavior modification has very little place for them. Program Agenda: Brief overview of animal learning Understanding what the quadrants represent and how they have become so misrepresented Distinguishing reinforcement learning from the quadrants Understanding the limitations and risks of the quadrant approach to behavior modification through practical examples Looking at the advantages of alternative ways of understanding animal learning and behavior modification techniques Learning Objectives: Attendees will understand the full breadth of the types of learning in animals, and consider how learning affects the way a dog’s brain processes information and a dog’s decision making. Attendees will explore the limitations of using the quadrants as a model for reinforcement learning
